CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The medical examiner was an older gentleman named Carl Maxwell. He had a soothing voice which was almost morbid, considering what he did for a living. When Kate spoke with him, she could easily imagine him recording one of those calming yoga narrations to help people focus.

“The toxicology reports revealed that only one of the victims was intoxicated at the time of their death,” Maxwell said. “That was Mariah Ogden. Kayla Peterson had some alcohol in her system, not enough for me to think she would have been drunk. She might have had a total of two beers if I had to guess.”

“And what about Vanessa Fenton?”

“Her blood levels were all over the place. I’m fairly certain she was doing a drug of some kind, but I saw no traces of alcohol.”

“The abnormalities in her blood levels…do you think they would be indicative of mushrooms or some other psychedelic?”

“Let’s see,” Maxwell said. Kate could hear him typing something into a computer and then humming to himself. About fifteen seconds later he made an “a-ha” noise. “Yes, I think that would be a suitable explanation. Because we just got the body recently, a more conclusive study should be completed sometime tonight.”

Kate almost ended it on that note, but felt a link right there, within her grasp. It might be a stretch, but certainly worth checking out.

“Mr. Maxwell, is there any way you could rush those results? It might be very important to find out if Vanessa was drinking.”

“Of course. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out.”

Kate ended the call, knowing they could simply go back to Jenna and ask. She had, after all, confessed to using the mushrooms. But as far as Kate was concerned, a drug test of Venessa’s blood would trump Jenna’s word easily. If she had to wait a bit rather than retreading old ground, that was fine with her.

Besides, if her link was right and all three girls had been drinking on the night they were killed, it suddenly made another lead they had stumbled upon seem all the more promising.

She walked back to their makeshift office and happened to find DeMarco standing in the doorway to Gates’s office. She was looking over a sheet of paper with numbers and graphs on it.

“What’s that?” Kate asked.

“Sheriff Gates was kind enough to find a record that the local MADD chapter sent in a few weeks after the Jonathan Bowen accident,” DeMarco said, handing it over to her. Inside the office, sitting at his desk, Gates looked a little uneasy.

Kate looked at the paper as Gates explained the results. “Some of the women with MADD worked with us to find the number of traffic accidents involving not only drunk driving, but specifically when the drivers were under twenty-one years of age. As you can see, the results are a little staggering.”

“They usually are,” Kate said. “This is from two years ago, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Anything more recent? Maybe to show newer trends and results?”

Gates shook his head and frowned.
